We are working toward a 100-year goal of creating the kind of Interactive Entertainment industry we want our kids, grandkids, and great-great-grandkids to inherit and thrive in.
But that kind of thing needs to be built in stages. For the first two years of our gathering we specifically avoided making any plans. Instead we asked two questions:
"What does the world need from Christain game developers today?"
... & ...
"What does the community of Christian Game Developers need to thrive in this world right now?"
From the beginning it was clear that one fundamental challenge rose above all others: People.
If we had a blank check to build the best Christian-made game in history, we couldn't do it. There just aren't enough believers in the industry...yet. So as we closed our gathering in 2023, and worked on into the winter, we settled on the following goals as a place to start building a foundation of people. What starts with a stream can build steadily into a thundering cataract of creatives.
Big ideas take time, wisdom, and resources.
This idea, to see it come to fruition, will take billions of dollars, over decades, and patience to bear good fruit.
So we need partners. People and organizations who can catch the vision and commit significant permanent capitol to things like building studios, endowments, and more.
While Imladris is building something new, we must learn from those who have gone before. If we believe that Interactive is the ascendent crossroads of all the arts then we stand to gain invaluable wisdom from the sages of Hollywood, New York, and Nashville. When kingdoms face generational secession it can be one of the most difficult, tumultuous, and dangerous of seasons...unless it's done with exceptional grace, humility, and wisdom.
So we seek the Sages, the Oracles, the spiritual and professional giants who have learned much and are willing to mentor this growing group of newly minted Kings and Queens.
At the functional center of Imladris are the Game Makers. These are the Redemptive Content Creators who we hope to find, feed, and flourish in this new kingdom. Coders, artists, musicians, writers and more - these are the Warrior-Poets who will bring Heaven to Earth through their innovation, excellence, and perseverance.
So we seek a few...those who's hearts swell at the vision and say 'Yes' to seeing Imladris built in their lifetime, and in their backyard.
If our passion is for people, and if our eye is on the future, then the importance of an educational pipeline that validates, trains, and prepares the next generation of game makers can scarcely be overstated. And yet, the number of Christian universities with game development programs, and the number of students currently enrolled, is roughly 5% of similar programs in secular institutions. We aim to support, build up, and sow into the programs that do exist on any way we can with mentorship, internships, and the kind of relationships that can set a student up for long-term career success.
That said, we're not remotely limiting this effort to Christian universities. The opportunity to engage synergistically with Kingdom minder teachers and students at schools all over the world may in fact be the larger opportunity to have disproportionate influence and leverage. By demonstrating a spirit of helpfulness and a genuine desire to foster success, we expect to attract the favor of those who are hungry...but they don't know what for.
I once was teaching a Sunday school lesson to a group of high schoolers. 'Who here plays video games?' I asked and almost nobody raised their hand. A few minutes later I asked, "Remember that time in Halo where MasterChief has to save Cortana?" ... and almost all the hands went up. -=Busted!=- Players and their parents have said over and over that the world needs good game content for believers and yet even when that content is made they struggle to find their audience. The proper 'reward' for every artistic endeavor is an audience. In the case of Interactive, that means players.
So we seek to link up with existing and new communities where gaming and faith are held together as point of common interest, and shared passion, who can aggregate an engaged audience of fans who love Christ, and love gaming, together.
Setting goals like these are critical to making meaningful progress, and yet we must be careful not to become hidebound by them. As we start this next phase of our work the goals seem good to us but remain subject to adjustment, to tweaking, to remaining stubbornly agile as we proceed.
This is a path through uncharted wilds.
A course over mysterious seas.
And exactly the kind of thing our Lord indicated would characterize those following His Spirit.
We hope you'll be inspired.
We hope you'll engage.
And we pray you'll support this Epic story.
Who are these people anyway?
We are business owners, game makers, and mothers. We are AAA, Indie, and advocates. We are all professionals in the space and advocates for the unique way games can move the human heart.
